Northwestern's 5th and 6th grade students recently discussed with Mrs. Nell the importance of having a growth mindset. To complete the lesson, students were each given one page to color, without knowing the the end result would resemble. The artwork was then assembled to reveal a Growth Mindset collaborative poster.

Fishing for Problems

posted Dec 4, 2018, 11:05 AM by Kelsey Nell

Kindergarten through 3rd grades recently went fishing to learn the difference between big fish and small fish sized problems. Students determined that small fish problems are those that kids are strong enough to solve all by themselves. Big fish problems are those in which safety is at stake and they must involve an adult to find a solution.

Counselor's Welcome

posted Aug 7, 2018, 12:20 PM by Kelsey Nell   [ updated Aug 7, 2018, 12:22 PM ]

Greetings Northwestern Parents and Guardians,

I hope you have all had a great summer, and are enthusiastic for another wonderful school year! My name is Kelsey Nell, and I will be serving as the counselor for the entire Northwestern District during the 2018-2019 school year. While I am new to the Northwestern area, my husband Casey and I were both born and raised in nearby White Hall. Over the past ten years, I have spent time working as a Walt Disney World cast member, a United Emirates Airline flight attendant, and as a Northern Illinois University student conduct administrator. I am excited to once again be back in Central Illinois, and am thrilled to be a Northwestern Wildcat!

As a professional school counselor, my primary responsibility is to promote the academic, social/emotional, and career development of all students.  I look forward to providing support to students, staff, families, and community members.  I will be meeting with students individually and in small groups, conducting classroom lessons, meeting with parents, collaborating with teachers and staff, and consulting with community organizations to meet the needs of all Northwestern students and families.

I am eager to help students achieve their goals, and provide support for parents and teachers. I have offices at both the Junior/Senior High School and Elementary. I can be reached by email at knell@northwestern.k12.il.us or phone at 217-436-2011.

Respectfully,

Kelsey Nell
